Previous studies have shown that indices designed to quantify the accumulation of health problems or “deficits” in older individuals can provide powerful prognostic tools that predict both short and long-term survival (e.g., Searle et al. 2008, BMC Geriatrics 8: 24). It was therefore of interest to compare the prognostic performance of the 13-variable healthy aging index we developed (see Table 2 of manuscript file) with an alternative approach that is based upon accumulation of deficits.
